Building Information

Entrance

When you come to the entrance, there is a buzzer system to your right on the brick wall. Buzz the relevant company you are looking for. The big swinging door should be open, if not there is a small grey door within the larger door. Please just push and step in, ring the doorbell and we will come and let you in.

The door is quirky and old, there is also a little step over the door frame on your way in. Do steps make the doorway inaccessible for you? If so, do let us know and we’ll make sure the entrance has level access. The doorways through the main entrance have push to open buttons.

Inside

The workspaces on the ground floor are accessible without using steps.

There is a ground floor level-access toilet (1900mm deep – 1600mm wide) with a baby change table. There are 2 more toilets in the basement, accessible by a short run of stairs. Toilets are unisex single-occupancy rooms with sinks and mirrors.

The upper two floors are accessed by stairs.

Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome.

Building History

Kaleider Studios is at 45 Preston Street, in the West Quarter of Exeter, UK. It has been home to artists for four decades.

The building is a 19C warehouse. This means that it is beautiful and quirky. It also means floors are sometimes uneven or sloping. Please be aware of this when visiting.

45 Preston Street was the home of the now closed contemporary art gallery Spacex for 40 years and hosted artist studios in its upper 2 floors.

Kaleider worked hard with the landlords to bring the building back into a useable state for opening in 2019. Most recent evolutions include automatic doors and opening windows (April 2021) thanks to Cultural Recovery Funding from Arts Council England.
