I help lead the Met Office Informatics Lab, a multi-disciplinary team who explore new ways to make data useful. We do this by rapidly creating prototypes to test new technology, new scientific methods, and new ways of communicating information. So far we’ve explored virtual reality data visualisation, methods for analysing very big data fields in the cloud, and natural language interfaces (for example Alexa skills and chat bots). We work with partners from other organisations (e.g. AWS, US DoD, NASA) and within the Met Office to develop and export ideas.
The Informatics Lab doesn’t just make prototypes, we also research new ways of working. While the team members come from tech, science and design backgrounds, we work closely on all aspects of a project. This helps us truly understand problems and their potential solutions.
