Laura Hemming-LoweKaleider Resident
I am a multidisciplinary artist and performer from Devon, UK. I currently live and work between Devon and London. I studied BA Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths in 2007 and an MA in The Body in Performance at Laban in 2012.
I work across media including, and not limited to, performance, audio, film and photography. My solo work draws upon popular culture, gender politics, self-help culture and consumerism. In 2014 / 2015 I was awarded a residency and commission from Kaleider to create an audio art project titled One More Question. In 2017 I was commissioned to create an audio sound work for Super Normal Arts Festival with Co_broadcast collective.
I’ve performed at KW institute for Contemporary Art (2017), Martin Gropius Bau (2016), Royal Academy of Arts (2014), National Theatre Belgrade (2014), Laban (2012/13), CPT(2013), Steinway Hall, (2013), Tate Modern (2012), The Old Vic Tunnels (2012), National Theatre London (2011), Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (2011) & Shunt (2008).
I also produce and curate art events that bring together artists and provide a platform where new audiences can engage with performance art and live art. In June 2011 I founded SMASH LAB, a night-time laboratory that occupies spaces outside gallery walls for artists and audiences to experiment and explore performance and live art. I have curated and produced over 14 events featuring emerging and established artists including Bryony Kimmings, Season Butler, Lauren Barri-Holstein, That Pair, Phoebe Davies, New Noveta, Twisted Loaf, Katy Baird and Catherine Hoffman.
My current project The Poetics of Wurst is a photography, video art and audio work exploring the relationship between meat, sex and the body. In Nov 2016 I moved to Berlin and carried out “Sausage Therapy” sessions with a number of willing female participants whilst discussing relationships, the history of the phallus, gender politics, adultery and identity. This project will be developed into a performance piece with support from The Bike Shed Theatre in 2018.
